Commissioning a new website and how much will it cost

What clients need to know before commissioning a new website.

And how much will it cost?

We’ve had a few clients say to us recently that they ‘had no idea how complicated or detailed building a website is.” They’ve also been surprised at the price we’ve quoted.

If you want a website that looks good, functions well and achieves your company’s goals, you should be prepared to invest, not only money but time and thinking. Exactly how much will depend on what you need it do (the functionality – eg: customers will order products), how complicated it is and how big the site is (are there lots of unique pages).

We recently wrote this article about the stages of a website design project. Now, it’s time to consider the costs and your involvement.

What input is needed from the client to build a new website?


First things first – you need to do some thinking.
What do you want visitors to do? What do you want them to know? How do you want them to feel about your company?


What content will be on the site? Do you have this content ready? If not, what do you need to do to get it ready? (eg: write it yourself, commission a copywriter, commission a photographer). Do you already have the graphics needed for your site (your logo, icons, diagrams)?

You must have the content (copy, images, graphics, forms, policies, etc) compiled before the visual design can start! When your copy is drafted, you will need to think about keywords (the words people looking for your products, services or type of organisation use for searching on the web) for SEO (search engine optimisation).

Importantly, you will need to think about how you will continue to update and refresh the content on your website.

Review & feedback

As a client you need to be prepared to be involved – in providing input and feedback at key points and in compiling and supplying all the content. If you don’t have the time for this, you will need to employ someone or pay an external consultant.

Technical details

Do you know where your domain is pointing? Where you will host your website? Do you have a Google Analytics account? Do you have a company Gmail, Facebook, Instagram accounts? If you can’t supply these details, your IT person may be able to. But, it’s unlikely your site will be able to be fully set-up and linked to other accounts without this info.

Ongoing software maintenance & security monitoring

Once your site is live, it’s not finished. It should be monitored for bugs and fixes needed. Software will need to be updated and security monitored.

How long does it take to plan, design & build a website?

A custom-designed site will take at least 3 months from start to finish.

And, finally, how much will it cost?

The cost to build a custom-designed website that looks good, is functional, is easy to use and find information, helps you achieve your business goals and gets found on the web, can vary.

You need to budget for between $10,000 – $15,000 minimum and then it’s upwards from there depending on your requirements. You may also need copywriting and photography (say around another $5,000).

Then, you need a budget for ongoing maintenance, hosting and updates. This is likely to amount to several $1,000 per year.
